Keith Whitener FAQ

Who are you?

I'm Keith.  I'm a research chemist currently living in DC and working at the Naval Research Lab. You can find my professional CV (along with links to my papers) here.

Who are you not?

There are a lot of Keith Whiteners.  I'm not involved with a nature conservancy.  I'm not a reverend.  I'm not an internet comedian.  I wasn't born in North Dakota.  I'm not a prison warden.  I'm not planning to rappel off a 15-story building for charity.  I'm not a soccer coach.  I don't own a construction company.

I have comments or suggestions. How do I get in touch with you?

You can reach me at keith@keithwhitener.com.

Were you on Jeopardy!?

Yes.  My stats are here.

What did you do with the money?

A lot of taxes, a little bit of charity, and not much else so far.

What's your Erdos-Bacon number?

No more than 8 or 9.  My Erdos number is at most 5: I published a few papers with Martin Saunders, who is an erstwhile collaborator with Ken Wiberg, who published a paper with David Spiegel when Spiegel was in grad school, who published a paper with his grandfather Harold Shapiro a few years ago, who published a paper with Paul Erdos.  [Thanks to Eugene Douglass at Practically Science for pointing out his paper with Spiegel and Shapiro!] My Bacon number is 3 or 4 through Alex Trebek, depending on how you count.  If you count instances where Jeopardy! appears on a TV in the background of a movie, then it's 3 (for example, an episode of Jeopardy! appeared in Groundhog Day with Bill Murray, who was in Wild Things with Kevin Bacon).  If Trebek has to appear in person on camera, then it's 4:  Trebek made an appearance on Cheers with Woody Harrelson, who was in Zombieland with Bill Murray, who--as we mentioned before--was in Wild Things with Kevin Bacon.

I only count Bacon numbers for people who have actually acted in movies.  You were just on a game show.

That's not a question.

Is "What's your Erdos-Bacon number" really one of your frequently asked questions?

If you count questions I ask myself, then yes.
